Michael Wendlandt is an ecohydrologist specializing in isotope ecohydrology, groundwater-surface water interactions, and environmental modelling. His work spans alpine, boreal, and urban environments, where he has led research at both watershed and local scales to assess water quality and ecosystem dynamics.
With extensive experience as a researcher in both government and academia, Michael has contributed to groundwater-dependent ecosystem mapping using machine learning, boreal river groundwater-surface water interaction studies, and isotope-based surface-groundwater characterization in alpine environments, on water reuse assessment projects, and community-based environmental monitoring programs in the boreal region. His MSc research focused on evaluating over 120 reclaimed and opportunistic wetlands within Alberta’s oil sands region, using stable isotopes, radon tracers, and bathymetric surveys to assess hydrological function and reclamation success.
Michael holds an MSc in Ecology from the University of Calgary and a BSc in Environmental Science from Mount Royal University. He is also a Professional Biologist (P.Biol) and the Founder of Rogue Environmental Solutions Inc., where he applies his expertise to innovative environmental monitoring, reclamation, and nature-based solutions. Additionally, he is a certified Journeyman Red Seal Instrumentation Technician with over eight years of control and automation experience in the energy sector.
Beyond his research, Michael is passionate about knowledge mobilization and community engagement. He holds a Certificate in University Teaching and actively works to disseminate scientific knowledge to communities, landowners, and stakeholders. His efforts focus on bridging the gap between scientific research and practical environmental solutions, empowering communities to make informed, science-based decisions about their ecosystems.
Murdoch McKinnon is an ecohydrologist specialized in quantifying and understanding the linkages between hydrology, water quality, and nutrient dynamics in a variety of ecosystems. With experience working in Alberta’s urban and boreal landscapes, he has contributed to assessments of landscape controls on water quality and the development of novel wetland restoration techniques for the oil and gas industry. Murdoch’s ongoing research explores ecosystem resiliency to climate change, focusing on how drought and wildfire impact ecosystem function and vegetation establishment on restoration sites and in disturbed ecosystems. He is passionate about advancing wetland restoration science and practice, and works to improve our understanding of hydrological and biogeochemical processes.
Murdoch holds a PhD in Geography and Environmental Management from the University of Waterloo and a BSc in Environmental Science from Mount Royal University. He has experience in academic and applied industrial research, has supported environmental policy development at the Federal government, and teaches university-level courses in Ecology and Environmental Health. As a Co-Founder of Rogue Environmental Solutions Inc., Murdoch uses his expertise in hydrology, ecosystem ecology, and environmental management to develop science-driven solutions for environmental monitoring and resource management.
Beyond research and fieldwork, Murdoch is an avid backpacker and skier who thrives in high-alpine environments. He is also passionate about science communication, working to make complex environmental concepts accessible to communities, policymakers, industry stakeholders, and students. He is passionate about leveraging science to help clients make informed environmental management decisions.
